Module 1 – (2 day course, however a shadow training day is often bolted onto this module). Includes the following 3 units:
This module must be completed before any pool work is carried out.
Management of medical conditions in hydrotherapy for small animals: (2 credits)
Learners will gain knowledge of specific medical conditions and how they impact on hydrotherapy treatment. Learners will be able to identify common medical conditions and explore the factors facing a hydrotherapist when managing a patient with these conditions. This module will be assessed by means of a theory test.
Management of Common Orthopaedic and Neurological Conditions in Hydrotherapy for Small Animals: (3 credits)
This unit will discuss how hydrotherapy can help the treatment of a variety of common orthopaedic and neurological conditions. Learners will be abel to identify a variety of conditions and describe key presenting indicators. This module will be assessed by means of a theory test.
Anatomy and Physiology for Small Animal Hydrotherapy: (4 credits)
This unit looks at relevant aspects of anatomy and physiology for the hydrotherapists. The unit exxplores the canine skeletal system, muscle structure and nerves. Learners will look at the composition of various bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments. This module will be assessed by means of a theory test.
Module Two – (2 day theory, 2 day shadow training plus 2 individual assessment). Includes the following Units:
Introduction to Hydrotherapy: (4 credits)
Understanding hydrotherapy and the different types of equipment, understanding the conditions suitable for pet hydrotherapy, referral process and professional duties of hydrotherapists. This module will be assessed by mean of a theory test with an element of practical demonstration of competence.
Assessing and Checking an Animals Suitability for Hydrotherapy: (3 credits)
Understanding the importance of a patient’s medical history, interpreting and understanding information provided in the referral process, being able to perform health checks on pets, knowing signs of suitability and unsuitability for hydrotherapy treatment. This module will be assessed by means of a theory test will an element of practical demonstration of competence.
Administering Hydrotherapy Treatment to Small Animals: (3 credits)
Preparing patients for hydrotherapy, preparing the environment for hydrotherapy, caring for a patient throughout hydrotherapy treatment. Learners will be required to prepare an animal and the enrivoment for a hydrotherapy session. Professional documentation will be discussed and used throughout the course.
Module 3 – (3 day course). Includes the following 4 units:
Professional Practice and Multi Disciplinary Team working for hydrotherapists: (2 Credits)
The module looks into the importance of working within a multi disciplinary team in the hydrotherapy sector, exploring the the roles, responsibilities and referral process. Learners will gain knowledge of various treatments that may be involved by other team members and what affect this can have on the hydrotherapy process. This module will be assessed by means of a theory test.
The Principles of Small Hydrotherapy: (2 Credits)
This module looks at the techniques and approaches that are allowed to be used by hydrotherapists. Completing this unit alone will not give learners the competance required to administer hydrotherapy, learners will understand that they must act within their own personal limitations and professional conduct. Learners will gain knowledge in the application of hydrotherapy techniques. This module will be assessed by means of a theory test.
Small Animal First Aid for Hydrotherapists: (3 credits)
Recognising and dealing with a variety of emergency situatons, discussing areas of professional competence and personal limitations. This module will be assessed by means of a theory test with some practical elements.
Water Managment for Small Animal Hydrotherapy: (3 credits)
During this course you will gain a basic understandment of water treatment. Learners will explore functions of pool equipment and water chemistry along with the various chemicals used in the pool. This module will be assessed by means of a theory test with a practical demonstration of competence
